Grey’s Anatomy Season Finale

Well. Let’s pause a moment to reflect where we were at the end of the 3rd season. Burke left Cristina at the altar after 3 years of browbeating, insisting that she change and often forcing his own interpersonal views on her. Meredith left Derek, emotionally, when she made the announcement that the wedding was off. George failed his exams to make resident. Bailey was exhausted and feeling defeated. Alex lost Ava (now known as Rebecca) as she went home with her husband. Addison decided to leave Mark, Derek and Seattle Grace behind to go to L.A. The episode was a total downer. Now let’s fast forward one year and one writer’s strike later. It’s been an interesting year in the life of Seattle Grace’s residents and attendings. But where do we start with this finale? Let’s just do it by character:

Richard (The Chief)

The Chief was thrown out by his wife previously when he wouldn’t retire from being Chief at the hospital. He also had to come to terms with his previous affair with Meredith’s mother that led to the destruction of that marriage and the emotional divorcement Meredith’s mother made. Meredith’s mother also passed away in Season 3. This episode has the chief getting back together with Adele and Meredith confronting him over that affair and the fact that her mother apparently tried to commit suicide to get Richard to come back to her. (I never liked Meredith’s mother, she was a selfish-narcissistic loon - great surgeon be damned.) We also got to see the Chief be Chief as he got his surgeons organized, put Dr. Hahn in her place and took charge. That was nice to see.

Meredith Grey

After 4 years of Meredith’s dark places and emotional ups and downs, we spent this season getting inside her head. Love her or hate her, Meredith had a messed up childhood and despite the fact that she is an extraordinary surgeon and gifted doctor, her people skills stink. She’s been seeing a therapist all season and the realization that her mother wasn’t really trying to die when she slit her wrists in front of her helped her to achieve a sense of closure with that dark period of her life. It also paved the way to her reunion with Derek. The clinical trials of the last few episodes also paid off for them as they were successful with their 13th patient. Meredith and Derek chased after each other in the last 10 minutes, finally hooking up on the land where Derek wanted to build their house. Meredith did a very romantic thing, setting up lanterns to create a ‘faux’ house and telling Derek where she wanted their room to be and where their kids’ rooms would be. The kiss was spectacular. But Derek turned around and said he had to go — break up with Rose — so he could come back and be with Meredith fully. While it was a great two seconds together, I hate to think what will happen to Derek between this season and the next.

Cristina Yang

Cristina’s been in a bad place all season. She changed herself for Burke, not an easy task and his dumping her personally and professionally really left her messed up all season. She’s been a lousy teacher to her interns, cut out of surgeries by Dr. Hahn (who I cannot stand and as of yet, they’ve not made her remotely likeable in her attitudes) and drifting. This episode saw Cristina get her mojo back, not only in the surgery (her shut up line is classic and that she got backed up by the Chief even better), but also as a teacher. Her friendship with Meredith is a rock in this show and I was happiest with where this season left her. Shedding the past so she can continue upwards and onwards.

Izzy, George and Alex

George has had a bad couple of years. His dad died. He married Callie. He slept with Izzy. He broke up with Callie. He failed his Intern exam and he’s been a glorified paper pusher for six months. He stood up for himself with the Chief after Lexie (who is a twit that steals stuff) told him he failed his exam by one point. George gets to take the test again, so here’s hoping he’s a resident next fall.

Izzy finally got over herself in self-destructing since Denny died (it took her two years) but she’s finally growing as a person and a doctor. She stood up for what Rebecca needed, even taking Alex’s abusive treatment as she acted like a doctor. Bailey gave her the keys to the clinic and now she’s found her niche.

Alex is a mess, but I find Alex one of the most fascinating characters on the show. We’re finally getting deeper into his psyche and learning that he’s gone through caring for his mother when she couldn’t care for herself definitely opened up the door to understanding him more.

As for the rest — the Callie/Hahn kiss was no big deal. I know folks warned it would be a shocker, but I can’t find myself caring. I enjoyed Sloane’s involvement more and his little boy cheerful “I’ve grown” comment. Bailey recognizing the bigger picture and working on being the best surgeon and the best chief resident, but also needing to be a better mom and wife. Who can’t adore Bailey? And that’s it for this season on Grey’s Anatomy.

Next year is the 5th season and it is starting off on a better note than this one did, so I’m definitely back to looking forward to it.
